The Orphan Trains in Illinois
Rock Springs Nature Center
Sunday, Jun 23, 2019
The Orphan Trains brought children from the East Coast to homes in the Midwest from the 1850s to the 1920s. Some children suffered extreme hardships while others found loving families, but most kept their stories secret. Now almost forgotten by history, about 200,000 children rode the rails. Guest speaker Rochelle Gridley, a Central Illinois librarian and also a volunteer at the McLean County Museum of History, will tell the stories of several local children including some from Decatur and Macon County.
