Children Ages 5 – 12
Club participants experience camp alongside the Earth Adventures full day camp once a week on Tuesday mornings, from 9am to Noon. The theme for 2016 is Expeditions, each week campers will take a new “expedition” to explore the planet, its plants, animals, and people. Camp activities include games, crafts, and exploring outdoor habitats and wildlife.
Camp meets at the Information Shelter at Rock Springs Conservation Area. A fee of $12/camper per week includes all supplies, activities, and a mid-morning snack. You can pick and choose which weeks to come, or attend all ten from June 7 through August 9. Space is limited to 30 campers each week.
|Scales, Shells and Slim
|Adventure Clubbers will get up close and personal with smooth snakes and singing frogs, with a hike to the ponds to find local frogs and tadpoles. We will do some seining or dip netting to try to catch a few. You will have a chance to touch a snake too (if you want to!).|
|Third Rock from the Sun
|Earth is a rocky planet located in just the right place in space. Campers will visit the Star Lab and investigate rocks, minerals and crystals.|
|Descendants of the Dinosaurs
|Dinosaurs still walk the earth in the form of our feathered friends, the birds, and they are truly amazing. Clubbers will learn some bird basics and meet and greet live exotic birds. Sponsored by the Decatur Audubon Society.|
|Many animals can put on a great show. Campers will discover animals that are masters of disguise, some that are tricksters and others the strut their stuff. Clubbers will also enjoy “Vintage Amusements” and learn about the importance of live performances such as the circus, magic and medicine shows in past times.|
|Great Balls of Fur
|Ungulates to rodents, big cats to whales, all mammals share similar characteristics. Campers will look for clues that mammals live in the forests and prairies, and learn about mammal behavior.|
|This week Clubbers will investigate the wetlands, learn about fish and fishing, and play wild and wacky water games.|
| The Quest
|Clubbers will learn more about themselves and their abilities this week. They will participate in canoeing, archery, and also explore their creative side.|
|Going Buggy||July 26|
|So many bugs, so little time. Insects can be pests, but they are critical to the health of natural systems. Clubbers will meet a real bee keeper, do a taste test, and net and examine insects.|
|Animal Antics|| August 2
|Clubbers will consider animal behavior in nature and human nature as well. We will explore predator-prey relationships, look for examples of camouflage and mimicry, and learn about ourselves at the same time. Dog behavior will be explored.|
|The Voyagers|| August 9
|The early explorers were a hardy bunch, they had to be to survive in the wilderness. After a visit from a Mountain Man from the past, Clubbers will explore a creek, practice archery, and learn survival skills.|
